Cycloputer saves routes on your device, but its map and elevation data are loaded from Cycloputer’s own map server and route calculation uses Apple Maps. Requested map areas and route waypoints can therefore leave the device without an app account.
1. Controller and scope
The operator of Cycloputer can be contacted at apps@cblum.ch or through cblum.ch. This notice covers the app’s inspected development version. The website, external providers, your email service and destinations you choose for exports have their own processing arrangements.
2. Local data and location access
The app stores imported, planned and recorded routes as GPX files in its app documents. Recordings can contain precise location points, elevations and timestamps. Settings and the path used to recover an interrupted recording are saved locally in system preferences. Route names and files may themselves identify places or activities.
Location access supports your map position, navigation and ride recording. The current development version requests “While Using the App” access only when you start a recording, start navigation or choose to follow your position; it does not request “Always” access. A recording you start continues in the background, with the iOS location indicator, until you stop it. You can restrict or revoke access in iOS Settings. Background availability depends on the permission granted and iOS; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted recording.
The app does not access Apple Health data and does not scan for Bluetooth sensors. The HealthKit capability and health purpose strings were removed from the current development version; the sensor screen labels these connections as unavailable.
3. Online map, route and elevation services
Apple MapKit calculates directions (cycling directions in Bicycle mode, walking or driving in the other modes). The app sends route endpoints/waypoints for directions requests; these are online requests. With the optional offline routing package, routes are calculated on the iPhone and no waypoints are sent. See Apple Maps & Privacy for Apple’s description of its mapping services.
The map, relief, contour lines, elevation profile and 3D view use data from Cycloputer’s own map server at tiles.cblum.ch, operated by the app operator on a server in Germany. Map data is based on OpenStreetMap; relief and elevation are based on the Mapterhorn terrain model. The app requests map tiles for the area you view and elevation tiles along a route; tile coordinates and zoom levels reveal the requested map area, and the server receives connection information such as your IP address and request time. Its web server access log is rotated daily and kept for 14 days. These requests are separate from GPS permission: viewing the map or importing or planning a route sends tile requests even if access to your current device location is disabled. If no terrain data is available, the app shows the elevation as unavailable rather than estimating heights.
You can download an offline map and an offline routing package of Switzerland from tiles.cblum.ch (Settings, General, Offline data). The server sees the download like any other map request. With the offline map installed, the map, nearby search, street names and elevation profiles read local files and send no requests to the map server; the 3D view and the map legend still use it. The packages stay in the app’s storage, are excluded from device backups and can be removed on the same screen. Deleting the app removes them.
Place search sends the text you type and the visible map area to Apple Maps. Nearby search (for example toilets within 2 km) reads Cycloputer’s own map tiles from tiles.cblum.ch for the search area.
When you tap a public transport stop in Switzerland, the app asks the Swiss Transport API at transport.opendata.ch (operated by Opendata.ch, hosted in Switzerland) for the stop nearest to the tapped symbol and its next departures. The request contains the stop’s public map coordinates and station identifier, not your own location; the service logs the request with your IP address and time and keeps that log for 30 days according to its privacy policy. Departure data comes from opentransportdata.swiss. The “SBB” button opens the SBB Mobile app, or the SBB website if the app is not installed; SBB’s own terms apply there.
No other map, routing, road-snapping or elevation service is used. Offline routing uses the open-source Valhalla engine on the device. Requests use HTTPS, but the receiving server can see the requested map areas; no app-level end-to-end encryption applies.
4. Accounts, exports and support
No app registration, app sync server, advertising SDK or analytics SDK was found in the inspected source. This does not make external mapping or operating-system services free of technical logging.
You choose files to import and destinations for sharing GPX/KML exports. The app does not encrypt these files. Anyone receiving a copy may be able to read exact route coordinates and, for recordings, timestamps. Exported files, messages and copies held by other apps remain independent of Cycloputer.
Contact links open your selected email or browser service. If you send support email, your message, email address and attachments are processed through the mail services involved. Do not include a private route or location history unless necessary for your request.
5. Retention, deletion and backups
Saved routes have no automatic expiry. You can delete them through the saved-routes interface. Removing a route does not retract requests already sent to the map server or Apple, erase exported copies, or guarantee immediate removal from temporary files, caches or backups. If a route file cannot be deleted, the app reports the error and keeps the route listed. Temporary KML exports are kept in the app’s temporary folder only for sharing and are removed after the share sheet closes, on the next app start or with “Clear Temporary Files & Map Cache” in Settings, which also clears cached map tiles and other cached network responses; iOS may additionally purge temporary files. This does not affect copies already shared or device backups.
The app does not add its own encryption to local GPX files. Device security and any device/cloud backups you enable apply separately. Cycloputer has no central route database, and the map server’s request logs are not included in server backups. This is not a claim that your device or third-party providers have no backups.
6. Choices and requests
You can control location permissions, delete local routes, limit exports and refrain from online route operations. Turning off current-location access alone does not prevent networking for map viewing or imported/planned routes. For access, correction, deletion or privacy questions, contact apps@cblum.ch. Applicable data-protection rights remain available; you may contact the competent supervisory authority.
7. Safety and liability limits
Use the app at your own risk and independently assess traffic, terrain, weather, closures and legal access. Map, GPS, route, elevation and timing information can be wrong or unavailable. Stop safely before interacting with the app. It is not an emergency service, medical adviser or assurance that a route is safe.
To the extent permitted by law, the app is provided without warranties of accuracy, completeness, availability or fitness for a particular purpose. To that extent, liability for damage from use or unavailability is excluded, including data loss, lost profits and consequential damage. Mandatory legal rights and liability remain unaffected, including intent or gross negligence and personal injury where liability cannot lawfully be excluded.
